How to Fish Fish List: All 49 Creatures and Their Lures
Updated 2026-09-02 · Steam How to Fish
How many fish are in How to Fish, and how do you catch them all? Player-built catch lists count 49 creatures: 38 regular fish and 11 boss or special creatures. What you hook is decided by the bait or lure on your rod, not by the island you are standing on, so players report the whole collection can be finished from one late island: the volcano island the guides number as island 5, where every bait is said to be on sale. This how to fish all fish list pairs each creature with the bait that catches it, then covers drip variants, endangered species and how cooking changes what a fish sells for.
The creature names and bait pairings below come from three player-written Steam guides that were cross-checked against each other. Where two guides disagree, both answers are shown. Nothing here is an official species list from Dazed Games; the in-game encyclopedia on the Tab key is the only authoritative checklist, and it tracks drip variants separately.
Every regular fish and what catches it
Players report 38 non-boss creatures. The numbering follows the community catch list. "Free bait" is the starting bait some guides call the basic lure or the chip; "sausage" and "hot dog" appear to be the same shop item under two names in different guides.
| # | Creature | Bait or lure | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Brown Crab | Free bait, or sausage | Also listed under the crab fishing rod's ham bait |
| 2 | Piranha | Sausage, or beginner lure | Two guides say beginner lure, one says sausage |
| 3 | Gar | Free bait | |
| 4 | Shrimp | Free bait | |
| 5 | Mackerel | Free bait | |
| 6 | Rock Crab | Free bait, or sausage | The Bait and Fish Guide and the Lure Guide both file it under hot dog |
| 7 | Lobster | Sausage or hot dog | |
| 8 | Cod | Beginner lure | |
| 9 | Goby | Beginner lure | Spelled "Golby" in one guide |
| 10 | Pike | Free bait, or beginner lure | Not the same creature as The Old Pike mini-boss |
| 11 | Salmon | Beginner lure | One guide files it under standard lure instead |
| 12 | Perch | Beginner lure | |
| 13 | Triggerfish | Beginner lure | |
| 14 | Goldfish | Free bait, or beginner lure | |
| 15 | Catfish | Standard lure | |
| 16 | Clownfish | Standard lure | |
| 17 | Sea Urchin | Standard lure | |
| 18 | Yellow Boxfish | Standard lure | |
| 19 | Needlefish | Standard lure | Endangered species |
| 20 | Angelfish | Standard lure | |
| 21 | Bluegill | Standard lure | |
| 22 | Seahorse | Standard lure | Endangered species |
| 23 | Bowlfish | Standard lure | Endangered species, called "fish in an aquarium" in some guides |
| 24 | Bass | Professional lure | |
| 25 | Eel | Professional lure | |
| 26 | Red Snapper | Professional lure | |
| 27 | Sengarat | Professional lure | |
| 28 | Halibut | Professional lure | |
| 29 | Tigerfish | Professional lure | |
| 30 | Flying Fish | Professional lure | |
| 31 | Voxel Fish | Professional lure | |
| 32 | Parrotfish | Professional lure | Its drip version had a cooking bug, fixed in patch 1.0.11 |
| 33 | Dripper | Professional lure | A normal creature despite the name, unrelated to drip variants |
| 34 | Blobfish | Scientific lure | |
| 35 | Oarfish | Scientific lure | |
| 36 | Anglerfish | Scientific lure | Health nerfed in patch 1.0.10 |
| 37 | Stonefish | Scientific lure | |
| 38 | Superdwarf Fish | Scientific lure |
One guide also lists a creature called Bing Bong, caught with a coconut. It does not appear in the 49-creature list from the other two guides, so treat it as player-reported and not confirmed.
Boss and mini-boss creatures
These 11 fill the rest of the encyclopedia. Shop shelves only ever carry the mini-boss summons; no merchant stocks a lure for an island boss, so each of those has to be earned from that island's quest instead. Full fight strategies live on the bosses page.
| Creature | Bait or lure | Type | How you get the bait |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunfish | Beginner boss lure | Mini-boss | Shop, island 2 |
| The Old Pike | Beginner boss lure | Mini-boss | Shop, island 2 |
| Blue Shark | Standard boss lure | Mini-boss | Shop, island 3; its body unlocks the grill |
| Tuna | Professional boss lure | Mini-boss | Shop, island 4; drop the body to summon the Albatross |
| Goblin Shark | Scientific boss lure | Mini-boss | Shop, island 5; optional, nothing in the story points at it |
| Spider Crab | Empty beer can | Island boss | Give a beer to the lighthouse keeper on island 1 |
| Giant Piranha | Modified leech | Island boss | Give three leeches to the lady in the forest |
| Pufferfish | Carrot | Island boss | Give an endangered fish to the tourist on island 3 |
| Bowhead Whale | Fish bucket | Island boss | Give five fish to the scientist on island 5 |
| Albatross | Tuna | Island boss | Kill a Tuna and drop the body on the ground |
| Mutated Bowhead Whale | Bowhead Whale | Final boss | Throw the dead whale into the volcano |
One catch list places the Blue Shark under the ordinary standard lure as well as the standard boss lure. Players report it most often as the boss-lure mini-boss, so plan around the boss lure.
Ordinary lures, and the ones used on mini-bosses, can snap when you cast them and disappear from your inventory. Island boss lures are consumed every single time, so a failed attempt on the Pufferfish or the whale means redoing the quest that produced the bait. Both facts are player-tested rather than documented by the developers.
Where each bait and lure is sold
Only the entries with a price below are actually sourced. Where a guide never named the island or the cost, the row says so rather than guessing.
| Bait or lure | Island | Price | Source type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beer (becomes the empty beer can) | Island 1 lighthouse shop | 12 dollars | Player-reported |
| Crab fishing rod | Island 1 | 3 dollars | Player-reported |
| Beginner lure | Not confirmed yet | Not confirmed yet | |
| Beginner boss lure | Island 2 | 40 dollars | Player-reported |
| Standard lure | Island 3 | Not confirmed yet | Guides call it the pink lure |
| Standard boss lure | Island 3 | 280 dollars | Player-reported |
| Professional lure | Island 4 | Not confirmed yet | |
| Professional boss lure | Island 4 | 1,200 dollars | Player-reported |
| Scientific lure | Island 5 | Not confirmed yet | |
| Scientific boss lure | Island 5 | 5,800 dollars | Player-reported |
All bait is available for purchase on the volcano island, which is why collection hunters set up there instead of sailing between the islands. A fuller breakdown of what each tier attracts is on the bait page.
A note on island numbering. The player guides used for this page treat the volcano island as island 5 and call it "the final island", and every island number in the table above is theirs. Official patch note 1.0.11, dated 1 September 2026, instead refers to moving the roulette table on island 6, and this wiki counts six islands in total on the islands page. So there is at least one area past the volcano that the guides here do not number, and the roulette tables described further down this page may sit on island 6 rather than island 5. Which shops sit on which of the two is not confirmed yet; treat the island numbers in the bait table as the guide authors' numbering, not as official labels.
Drip creatures
Drip is a rarity tier layered on top of the creatures you already know. When one bites, the catch message comes up in rainbow colouring and the model itself wears a joke skin, so you will never wonder whether you got one. They use exactly the same bait or lure as the normal version, so there is no separate drip bait to buy. Players report roughly a 10 percent chance for an eligible non-boss catch to come up drip; that figure is player-tested and has never been confirmed by the developers.
- They are the currency for the Reel of Fortune slot machines, one per island, which pay out weapon and rod skins. The available skin pool widens with each island.
- They respawn, so nothing you gamble is permanently lost.
- The common farming trick from the bait guides: cast, then reel slowly, and right-click to release anything that is not drip instead of landing it. Players report five to eight bites per cast this way.
- Patch 1.0.5 on 22 August 2026 fixed the drip-collection achievement, which previously demanded every drip creature plus one extra before it would unlock.
- Patch 1.0.11 on 1 September 2026 fixed the drip parrotfish refusing to cook.
Endangered species
Endangered species are a separate system from drip variants. Only a few named species qualify, the game labels one as endangered on screen as you land it, and guide authors report that killing one pays a bonus. Every guide agrees there are three of them, that they are all standard-lure catches, and that handing one to the tourist on island 3 is what earns the carrot that summons the Pufferfish. A fish can be endangered and drip at the same time.
The guides do not agree on the names, though, so this list is not settled:
| Guide | Names it gives | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| "All 28 Achievements and Post-Game Route" | Needlefish, bowl fish, sea horse | Matches the creature spellings used in the catch lists above |
| "Ultimate Guide to Unlocking All Achievements" (speedrun section) | Needlefish, Seahorse, Fish-in-an-Aquarium | "Fish-in-an-Aquarium" is almost certainly the Bowlfish under another name |
| "Ultimate Guide to Unlocking All Achievements" (Vacation section) | Pigeonfish, Sea Horse, Fish-in-an-Aquarium | "Pigeonfish" appears nowhere in the 49-creature list; it may be a translation slip for Needlefish, but that is not confirmed yet |
Two of the three are safe to plan around: Seahorse and Bowlfish. The third is listed as Needlefish by two of the three passages and as Pigeonfish by one, and no official Dazed Games source names any of them, so check the on-screen flag when you land the catch rather than trusting a name.
Cooking, cleaning and what a fish sells for
There is no published per-fish price table anywhere in the sources, and this page will not invent one. What is documented is the set of multipliers that decide the number.
| Mechanic | Effect | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Grill cooking | Value climbs from 1x to a peak of 1.5x, then falls to 0 when the fish turns solid black | Player-tested |
| Lava cooking, volcano island | A flat 1.5x, with no window to misjudge | Player-tested |
| Killscore multipliers | Stylish kills multiply the sell value of the creature | Player-tested, see the killscore page |
| Roulette green | A winning green bet returns 35 times what the staked item was worth, as an item you then take to a merchant | Player-tested |
| Difficulty setting | Easy gives creatures 25 percent less health, hard gives 25 percent more | Official, patch 1.0.9 |
Hold F to inspect an item. Four readouts appear on the panel, according to the guide authors: value, the cooking multiplier, weight and killscore. The multiplier ticks upward in real time while the fish sits above the heat, which is how you know when to pull it at the 1.5x peak. The same 1.5x applies to weapons and other items, not just fish, so cook a gun before selling it.
Two cleaning and selling rules come straight from official patch notes rather than from players. Patch 1.0.10 on 27 August 2026 made weapons and tools get cleaned from cooking when dipped in water, so a cooked gun no longer stays charred. The same patch started saving items dropped on the ground between sessions, up to 64 items, prioritising weapons, tools, quest items and creatures. Patch 1.0.11 then required that an item must have been held once before it can be sold.
For the money maths players use: to sell something for 100,000 you need to bet an item worth at least 2,858 on roulette green, which after the flat 1.5x lava cook means a raw fish worth roughly 1,906. Guide authors leave themselves a margin and stake cooked fish valued near 3,200, which stops a slightly-off catch from paying out just under the 100,000 line. Scientific-lure fish from the volcano island are the ones players farm for this, because they report those as worth far more than anything on the earlier islands. One achievements guide adds that green x35 tables only appear on the last two islands, and patch 1.0.11 notes that a roulette table on island 6 was shifted slightly, which confirms one exists there, so expect to carry your cooked fish one hop further than the volcano; the exact table you use is not confirmed yet.

Sources and last check
Checked on 2 September 2026 against the research set for this wiki.
The 49-creature count, every creature name, and every bait or lure pairing come from three player-written Steam Community guides: the "ALL THE TYPES OF BAITS" complete fish and bait list, the "Bait and Fish Guide", and the "Lure Guide". All three are player-tested, not official, and they disagree on Piranha, Salmon, Rock Crab and Blue Shark, which is noted in the tables above. The 10 percent drip rate, the five-to-eight-bites-per-cast reeling trick, and the claim that lure rather than island decides your catch are all player-reported.
Lure and boss-lure prices, the grill and lava cooking multipliers, the F-key inspect panel, the Tab encyclopedia, and the roulette 35x maths come from the Steam guide "How to Fish - All 28 Achievements and Post-Game Route", whose author notes their prices were recorded on version 1.0.4 in a multiplayer run and have not been re-tested since. Treat every dollar figure on this page as player-reported and version-dependent.
The endangered species names are player-reported and contested. The "All 28 Achievements and Post-Game Route" guide gives Needlefish, bowl fish and sea horse; the "Ultimate Guide to Unlocking All Achievements" gives Needlefish, Seahorse and Fish-in-an-Aquarium in its speedrun section but Pigeonfish, Sea Horse and Fish-in-an-Aquarium in its Vacation section. That conflict is unresolved and is shown in full in the endangered species table above.
Island numbers on this page are the guide authors' numbering, in which the volcano island is island 5 and is called the final island. Patch 1.0.11 refers to an island 6, so those numbers are player-reported rather than official, and the roulette location in particular is not settled.
Only the patch notes table, the difficulty health and damage percentages, the cooking-cleanup change and the drip parrotfish fix are official, taken from the Dazed Games Steam announcements for patches 1.0.4 through 1.0.11 as published on the game's Steam store and community news pages, dated 21 August to 1 September 2026. Mod names, versions and download counts are from Thunderstore as of 2 September 2026 and will drift.
