Giant Piranha Boss in How to Fish: Swarms & Dynamite
Updated 2026-09-02 · Steam How to Fish
The short version of how to fish Giant Piranha: find three leeches in the grass on island 2, hand them to the lady in the forest, and she gives you the Modified Leech, the only bait that hooks this boss. The fight is a damage race against a boss that keeps spitting out smaller piranhas, and unlike the island 1 Spider Crab it never stuns, so there is no free damage window. Player guides agree the cheap answer is a Shotgun for the boss and melee for the adds, with Dynamite as an optional swarm-clearing tool. Everything below is player-tested from Steam Community guides; the official patch notes do not describe boss mechanics.
Giant Piranha at a glance
| Detail | What players report |
|---|---|
| Island | Island 2, the forest island guides call Leech Island or Piranha Island |
| Bait | Modified Leech, from the "Dinnertime" quest; the Bait and Fish Guide lists it as Leech Bait |
| Can you buy the bait | No. Island boss lures are never sold, only produced by that island's quest |
| Phases | Two, per the speedrun guides |
| Signature mechanic | Repeatedly spawns swarms of small piranhas |
| Does it stun | No, unlike the Spider Crab on island 1 |
| Budget loadout | Shotgun or the standard Pistol, plus a melee weapon and cooked fish |
| Achievement | Dinnertime, "Catch dinner for the lady in the forest" |
How to unlock the fight
The boss is gated behind a four-step quest, and the last step is the one players say they forget.
- Find three leeches lying on the ground in the forest. Players warn that the grass here swallows small items, a problem unique to this island, so walk the forest slowly and watch for the on-screen pickup prompt instead of hunting for a visible leech.
- Give the leeches to the lady on the rock. She hands over the boss bait.
- Bait your rod, fish the Giant Piranha up and kill it. It drops a trophy item.
- Bring that trophy back to the lady. This is what pops the Dinnertime achievement.
Guides disagree on the trophy's name: one calls it a tail and says the tail is the dinner, the other describes a skeleton and meat with the skeleton earning you the tracker for the next island. Both agree you carry the boss drop back to the same quest giver. Leech locations and what leeches catch are on the leeches page.
Island boss lures are always consumed on use, unlike regular and mini-boss lures which only have a chance to break. Whether the lady replaces a Modified Leech you lose is not confirmed yet.
How the Giant Piranha fights
It vomits adds. The boss spawns smaller piranhas continuously as the fight goes on. The 28-achievements guide advises ignoring the ones at range, killing only those that get close, and eating the small piranhas you kill to top your health back up, which turns the boss's own mechanic into your healing supply.
It does not stun. The Spider Crab charges, misses and stunlocks itself, a habit that gets new players killed here. Players describe the correct movement as kiting: keep moving, keep leading it, shoot on the move. RubenS's guide adds one positional note, keep your distance from the water's edge while you focus the boss.
Bosses also run on a timer, which is why the BossTimer mod advertises the exact time remaining before the active boss leaves. The Giant Piranha's timer length is not documented in any source here.
Loadout and what to buy on island 2
| Item | Price | Notes from player guides |
|---|---|---|
| Shotgun | $150 | The consensus pick: close-range burst that also cleans up the swarm |
| Pistol | Not confirmed yet | The Bean 1.0.5 solo guide says the standard Pistol on its own is enough to kill this boss |
| Dynamite | $25 | Unlocks here. Best used on food fish before the fight; see the split below |
| Knife or Brass Knuckles | Knife $45 on island 1 | Melee for the small piranhas, which are awkward to hit with a gun |
| Ammo box upgrade | Not confirmed yet | One guide places it beside the new fishing rod and weapon on this island |
| Laser sight | Not confirmed yet | Suggested to make hipfire easier without a scope |
| Beginner Boss Lure | $40 | Sold here, not needed for this boss, but useful for two later achievements |
Guides split on Pistol versus Shotgun. The 28-achievements guide says skip the Pistol and buy the Shotgun instead, on the grounds that the Shotgun carries you through several islands; the solo route in the Bean 1.0.5 Guide says the standard Pistol is enough here. The Updated Bean Achievement Guide does not settle it either, because its solo method buys and upgrades the Pistol on island 2 while its duo method buys the Shotgun instead. All of these are player opinions. Full pricing and attachments are on the weapons page.
One tip, from RubenS's guide only: use the instant weapon switch. When the boss bites, do not drop your catch by hand, because that puts you back on your fists. Press the hotbar key for your weapon and the game drops the fish and draws the gun in one action.
The fight, step by step
- Before summoning, stockpile cooked fish. On this island the 28-achievements guide treats the $25 Dynamite mainly as a food source, tossed into the shallows so you can gather whatever floats up, and the Updated Bean Achievement Guide repeats the same idea as a general rule: bomb some fish for healing food before you start a boss. A pocket full of cooked fish is what carries you through the damage race.
- Bait the rod with the Modified Leech and fish the boss up.
- Switch straight to your weapon with the hotbar key the moment it bites.
- Focus the boss, not the swarm. Kite in a wide circle and stay off the water's edge.
- When small piranhas crowd you, swap to melee, clear what is in arm's reach, then go back to the boss.
- Eat killed piranhas or cooked fish whenever you take a hit.
- Pick up the drop and take it back to the lady.
Dynamite: where the guides disagree
- For it: RubenS names Dynamite the best crowd-control tool in the game and says to throw it into the water where the small piranhas cluster, then focus the boss.
- Against it: the 28-achievements guide tells you to keep explosives off the adds, on the grounds that blowing a chunk out of your own health bar costs more than the swarm does, and warns that treating dynamite as a combat weapon will get you killed.
Both are player-tested claims from different authors. The safe reading is that dynamite works on a tight cluster thrown at from range and gets you killed once the swarm is already on top of you. Patch 1.0.11 makes the downside worse: the official notes state you now die from your own explosives even with friendly fire disabled.
The Under One Hour Tips guide goes further with a speedrun route that replaces the gunfight: farm to roughly $280 by blowing up fish, buy dynamite in bulk, plant a group of sticks against a fixed object near the shore, then hook the boss with the rod, lead it over the charge and set it off, repeating for the second phase. A different guide, the Updated Bean Achievement Guide for v1.05, offers the same idea as a general rule: if a boss looks like trouble, get your charges down before you summon it. This is a speedrun tactic, entirely player-reported, and after 1.0.11 a mistimed blast kills you outright.
Co-op and killscore
The game is 1-4 player co-op. RubenS's suggested split is one player on Dynamite and Shotgun for trash, the rest on SMG or Assault Rifle for sustained boss damage. The duo route in the Updated Bean Achievement Guide buys the Shotgun on this island and maxes its damage before starting the fight, and its author says the Shotgun mops up the adds without much trouble. The 1.0.11 friendly fire change matters more on this fight than anywhere else early, because the adds pull you into your own blast radius.
The swarm is also worth money, because killscore multiplies sell value. From the killscore breakdown guide the relevant multipliers are Explosion at 1.50x, Melee at 1.05x, and the multikill chain from Double Kill 1.05x up to 1.50x at a 10-plus killstreak, which a piranha swarm feeds naturally. One limit: Overkill does not work on bosses, so over-damaging the Giant Piranha itself scores nothing extra. These figures are player-datamined, not official.
Mods that help
Three Thunderstore mods target boss fights like this one: BossHP (11,708 downloads, v0.1.4) shows an exact synchronized boss HP number beside the native bar, BossTimer (8,649 downloads, v0.1.6) shows the time left before the boss leaves, and FishHP (14,346 downloads, v0.2.2) adds HP bars to non-boss creatures, which covers the swarm. All three depend on BepInExPack 5.4.2305 and ship inside the Enhanced_HowToFish modpack. Cheat-style mods also exist on Thunderstore; this site does not cover them.

All of that is player-tested or player-reported, not official. The one developer-confirmed fact here is from the official 1.0.11 patch notes on Steam: you now die from your own explosives even with friendly fire disabled. Mod versions and download counts are from Thunderstore on the same date. Timer length, Pistol and laser sight prices, and whether a lost Modified Leech can be replaced are not confirmed yet.
