Albatross Boss in How to Fish: Dodge Its Dives and Win
Updated 2026-09-02 · Steam How to Fish
How do you beat the How to Fish Albatross? Spawn it by killing the Tuna mini-boss and leaving the corpse on the ground, then fight the bird from inside a building instead of out in the open. It has two attacks, a dive that comes straight at you and a ranged projectile that telegraphs itself with a sound cue first, and cover answers both: break line of sight, then step out and shoot while it resets. Players report a fully upgraded SMG is enough, with the sniper rifle as the alternative if recoil fights you.
The Albatross is the island 4 boss and unlocks the Terrorizing bird achievement ("Defend the scared islanders from the terrorizing bird"). Its bait is not a purchasable lure at all but the corpse of the Tuna mini-boss. It sits between the pufferfish and the whales on the main route; see bosses for the full order.
How to spawn the Albatross
There is no lure for the bird itself. The bait is a corpse, and getting it is a mini-boss fight of its own.
- The Professional Boss Lure costs $1,200 in the island 4 shop. Fit it and reel in the Tuna, which is a mini-boss, not a normal catch.
- Kill the tuna. Guide authors report that killing it purely with explosives cuts the payout, so finish it with a gun.
- Drop the tuna body on the ground and back off. The bird comes down for it and the boss bar appears.
Two player-tested details. The corpse on the floor is the trigger, so if you finish the tuna at low health, pick it back up and heal first. And the professional lure has a durability roll and may survive, while the tuna is always consumed. Bait pairings are on bait.
Patch 1.0.10 (27 August 2026) fixed a bug where you could die to the tuna, spawn the albatross and then be unable to respawn, so play on 1.0.10 or later.
The two attacks and how to dodge them
| Attack | What it looks like | Counter |
|---|---|---|
| Dive (ram) | Lines up and swoops straight at one player; players call it near-impossible to dodge in the open | Get inside or behind a solid building before it commits; the grill roof works as panic cover |
| Ranged shot | A sound cue telegraphs it, then a projectile comes down at where you are standing | Move out of its firing line, or take the same cover you use for dives |
The whole fight is a cover rotation, not a duel. Both attack descriptions are player-tested rather than developer-documented, though separate guides describe them identically.
One detail makes cover viable: enemies are marked by a red dot that shows through solid geometry, so the bird stays on your screen even when a wall is between you. Players use it to time their peeks and stay tucked away whenever the bird is lined up on them.
Where to stand on island 4
Players do not agree on one building, and the honest answer is that they all work because they all break line of sight.
| Spot | Reported by | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Casino | The 28-achievement route guide | Best visibility while covered; watch the red dot and peek |
| Weapons shack | The solo Bean 1.0.5 guide | Tight and safe; peek in and out, retreat only for dives and ranged shots |
| Engine shop room | The updated Bean speedrun guide | Panic room while pre-placed explosives do the damage |
The solo Bean guide adds the detail most players get wrong: stay just outside your building for most of the fight so you are actually dealing damage, and duck in only for a telegraphed ranged attack or a swoop. Its author rates this the most aim-intensive stretch of a speedrun.
Weapons for the Albatross
| Weapon | Cost | Why it works here |
|---|---|---|
| SMG (Uzi) | $650 | Player-tested as enough at max damage; add the compensator ($600 on island 4) to keep recoil off the bird |
| Sniper rifle | Price not confirmed yet | RubenS's boss guide recommends it outright: aerial mobility makes short-range guns inefficient, so track the flight path and take headshots when it hovers or dives |
| Shotgun | $150 | Carries earlier bosses, but it is close-range burst against an airborne target |
| Dynamite | $25 | Pre-placed setups only, and see the 1.0.11 warning below |
| Assault rifle | Price not confirmed yet | Save that money for the volcano island fight |
Island 4 is also where the sniper scope and suppressor enter the attachment pool. Any weapon has four slots: extended mag, laser sight, red dot or sniper scope, and compensator or suppressor. Two patch 1.0.11 (1 September 2026) changes matter while shopping: iron sights were removed as a purchasable because players kept buying them by mistake and losing expensive attachments, and you can no longer downgrade from a suppressor back to a compensator. More in weapons.
Explosive setups and the 1.0.11 warning
Speedrunners solve the Albatross with dynamite rather than aim. Solo, one guide buys 17 dynamite and lays 16 of them around the middle of the island, drops the tuna there and detonates once the boss bar appears. In co-op, a duo route uses 25 sticks with the tuna placed where the bird lands, and reports that good timing one-shots it. Both counts are player-reported.
Treat those counts as player-reported and written for older builds. Patch 1.0.11 changed the rules underneath them: you now die from your own explosives even with friendly fire disabled, so any setup that had you standing beside your own charges is no longer safe as written.
Co-op scaling and difficulty
A duo speedrun guide reports higher co-op boss scaling here, which is why their bomb count is larger than the solo one. The rest of the co-op advice is player-tested too: while the bird dives one player, everyone else keeps firing, and guide authors rate bosses easier with more guns because a downed team-mate can be picked back up rather than losing the run outright. Lobbies support up to 8 players since patch 1.0.4. See co-op.
If the fight is simply beating you, patch 1.0.9 (24 August 2026) added a difficulty selector in the main menu and in-game. Easy gives all creatures 25% less health and 50% less damage; hard gives them 25% more health and 25% more damage. Those are developer-documented numbers, and halving incoming damage is the difference between surviving a dive and not.
Rewards and killscore
Kill the bird and you get the Terrorizing bird achievement plus boss meat, which the solo speedrun guide counts as three chunks. Speedrunners say to hold that meat for the volcano island and cook it in the lava there, because players report the lava applies the full 1.5x value multiplier without any timing window to judge, unlike the grill. The route guide notes in general terms that every boss leaves a distinct trophy item behind, but which trophy the Albatross drops is not confirmed yet in the guides checked here, so do not plan a quest hand-in around it.
Killscore, the game's style system, is worth a thought before you open fire: route guides report that each modifier is named on screen as it lands, that they multiply together, and that the total feeds the sell value of the kill. An airborne target shot at range from cover is exactly the shape that stacks the aerial and distance modifiers. Exact values, and which ones stop applying to bosses, are on killscore.
Mods that make the fight readable
Nothing here aims for you; these only surface what the base game hides. BossHP shows exact synchronized boss health beside the native bar, BossTimer shows how long before the boss leaves, and KeepInventory stops you losing your loadout on death. Aimbot, cheat menu and god mode mods do exist on Thunderstore for this game; this wiki does not cover them. Picks and install order are on best-mods.
Sources and last check
Checked 2 September 2026. Developer facts come from the official Steam patch notes published on the game's Steam store page: 1.0.11 (1 September 2026) for the own-explosives death and the shop changes, 1.0.10 (27 August 2026) for the tuna-death respawn fix, 1.0.9 (24 August 2026) for the easy and hard modifiers, and 1.0.4 for 8-player lobbies. Everything about the fight itself is player-reported from five Steam Community guides, each credited where it is used. "How to Fish - All 28 Achievements + Post-Game Route" supplies the tuna spawn, the two attacks, the red dot through walls, the casino cover spot, the maxed-Uzi call and the killscore description. "Bean 1.0.5 Guide (Solo)" supplies the weapons-shack cover spot, the peek-from-just-outside advice, the $600 compensator, the three chunks of boss meat and the lava-cooking plan. The updated Bean achievement guide for v1.05 (solo and duo) supplies the engine-shop-room cover spot, the 25-bomb co-op setup and the higher co-op boss scaling. "Under One Hour Tips/Guide 1.0.10" supplies the 16-stick solo dynamite setup. RubenS's complete boss and weapon strategy guide (30 August 2026) supplies the sniper rifle recommendation and the SMG, shotgun and dynamite prices. Boss health, the sniper rifle price, the despawn timer and the Albatross trophy item are not published anywhere in those sources, so they are marked not confirmed yet.
